Discover how Belt’s AI-native Work Management software restores visibility and control for managing hybrid work without sacrificing flexibility.

In two preceding articles [1], set out how hybrid and dispersed working have eroded the capacity of managers to manage and explained why firms need better remedies than continually checking-in or traditional project management software. In this concluding piece, I explain how a new Work Management application from Belt, can give firms back the visibility and control that are the keys to effective people management and simultaneously allow lawyers to keep the flexibility of WFH.

They say you can’t manage what you can’t measure. In a hybrid world, we can add: “You can’t manage what you can’t see.” Hybrid, remote, and dispersed working have become established and yet we’ve also established that they create a core business problem. Managers are detached from their teams, they can no longer see what’s going on. The result is that managers are driven to overmanage with too many meetings, too much communication and too much reliance on work management systems that were never designed to fill this particular role.

In the preceding article [2]I introduced an alternative way forward, which harnesses the power of AI-native software to give managers clear, real-time insights into the activities of remote workers. The idea is that by restoring visibility and control, those who want to work remotely still can, while at the same time their bosses can see and understand the work they’re doing and manage people and teams appropriately and effectively once more.

Overcoming The Problems With Hybrid Working And Getting The Best Of Both Worlds

In my previous article [1], I noted that hybrid working is here to stay, even though it severely disrupts traditional in-person people management and firms haven’t yet found a satisfactory way to overcome this. In this follow-up piece, I outline the thinking behind a new ‘best of both worlds’ solution that keeps the benefits of hybrid while helping firms negate the disadvantages.

In the first article in this series I proposed that the trouble with hybrid working is that leadership and supervision can’t be done effectively when people work remotely.  What I call ‘two-minute management’ is missing in action, so managers struggle to manage. This can lead to serious long-term consequences for the firm.

These can include chronic performance and commitment issues and flagging productivity, or its opposite, which is burnout. Without traditional levels of people visibility, managers are managing blind. Hence, firm leaders are trying to cajole partners and associates back into the office full time, while they’re simultaneously wary of upsetting lawyers who’re productive at home, and of being so heavy-handed with calls back to the office that talent leaves.

Next Generation Co-authoring capability eliminates friction and inefficiencies while letting customers stay in total control, driving maximum productivity

iManage, the company dedicated to Making Knowledge Work™, today announced that the Microsoft Co-authoring capability within the iManage knowledge Work platform is now generally available, enhancing collaboration for customers of all sizes, providing an easy way for knowledge workers to work on Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint documents simultaneously across teams.

Professionals can effortlessly collaborate on documents in real-time or at their own pace, with no need to wait for colleagues to finish before making forward progress. The ability to access and edit content on the iManage platform from anywhere, and co-author documents in real time, reduces friction around collaboration and boosts efficiency, security, and productivity.

“Next Generation co-authoring will serve as a powerful productivity driver for the iManage knowledge work platform,” said Neil Araujo, CEO, iManage. “Benefiting from our deep partnership with Microsoft allows us to give customers a new way to achieve seamless, secure, and efficient document collaboration, without disrupting their workflows or compromising security or compliance. We are pleased to see so many of our customers taking advantage of iManage and Microsoft Co-authoring to optimize their overall productivity and their ability to deliver the best tools to their workforce to collaborate safely and efficiently.”

Additional key benefits of Microsoft Co-authoring include the ability to maintain full control and transparency while co-authoring, creating a worry-free user experience. Document revisions made in real time appear in the iManage timeline view, allowing document owners to instantly see who edited the file and when. Additionally, users can roll back to earlier revisions and catch in-between changes, correct errors, and refine content before locking in a new version. Most importantly, co-authoring is built natively into the iManage platform, so users can collaborate on content while retaining the industry-leading security and governance protections they expect from iManage.

“The Microsoft Co-authoring capability within iManage streamlines collaboration and provides a single source of truth,” said Rob Howard, VP of Product Management, Microsoft 365. “Whether teams work in real-time or asynchronously, Co-authoring offers multiple ways to identify and remove roadblocks on the way to a final version. Professionals can ask questions, request clarifications, and leave comments directly in the document, ensuring important context is in one place within the work product while reducing versioning challenges.”

Previously offered as part of the iManage Early Access Program, Microsoft Co-authoring was used by more than 90 iManage customers, gathering valuable feedback that has helped refine and optimize the experience beginning on July 15, 2024. Now, with its general availability, even more organizations can leverage this powerful capability to enhance collaboration and productivity.

Why law firms struggle with hybrid work and how evolving management practices can bridge the gap between firm leaders and remote employees.

In 2020, law firms scrambled to enable remote working during Covid-19. Five years on and firm leaders’ would rather have staff back in the office full-time, but by and large junior partners and associates don’t want to be there. This is a problem for firms, but not one caused by remote working per se, but that the issues really stem from firms not knowing how to manage remote working well.

It seems that the legal sector is currently struggling with the fact that leadership teams want people back in the office full time; but equally they know that trying to wean people off hybrid can cause lots of friction. They’re not alone.

The other morning, I read yet another piece of research underscoring the irrevocable nature of the shift to hybrid. According to Randstad’s 2025 global review of 26,000 workers, flexibility and work-life balance are – for the first time – more important to employees than salary.[1] Also in January 2025, a Pew Research Center survey showed that nearly half of workers would consider changing jobs if required to return to the office full time.[2]
